Mathew "Gator" Harmon, Jr., 79, of Elyria, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the New Life Hospice Center in Lorain, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Harmon was born in Sumter County, Alabama (home of the Choctaw Indian). He attended the Demopolis City Schools in Alabama and last attended Elyria High School.
He was a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church. He formerly worked for H.J. Humm Construction and retired from Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail). He was an avid Fisherman and Hunter and was a Charter Member of the North American Fishing Club and a member of the LaGrange Hunting and Fishing Society.
Mathew is survived by five children, Richard (Mia) Harmon and Tonya Harmon, both of St. Louis, Missouri, RoAnna Brown-Walton of Lorain, LaVonda Clinton (Tommy) Brown and Jeanne Clinton (Sean) Cunningham and brother, Ernest (Maria) Harmon, all of Sandusky; and 10 grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Mathew was preceded in death by his mother, Maggie Chaney; father, Mathew Harmon, Sr.; and son, Mathew Harmon III; siblings, Eddie Junior, Robert Capers, Daniel Junior, Luberta Banks, Hettie Johnson, and Richmond Harmon.
Family and Friends may call Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11 A.M. until the time of Service at 12 Noon at Carters Funeral Home, 127 W. Bridge St., Elyria, where Reverend Willie Gardner, Pastor of Unity Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate.
