Julie Ellen Miller Felty

Julie's soul left the Earth at 4:35 P.M., Friday, October 4, 2013. She will be missed by all for her love for all people and her generous and joyful spirit.

She was born June 24, 1949 in the original hospital in Amherst, on St. John the Baptist Day and departed on the day set aside for St. Francis of Assissi who was one of her life long inspirations. She was educated in the Amherst Exempted Village School System. Her grandfather, Fred R. Powers, was Principal at Powers school when she entered Kindergarten. She graduated from Marion L. Steele High School, Class of 1967 with many State and local honors in English. Her love of theater was reinforced by spending many, many productive hours in the Drama department under the direction of Richard Banker and Kaye Koontz Oblinger Jones. Her love of music was reinforced by Mr. James Wilson and Mr. Bob Bostwick, while singing in Concert Choir. She helped arrange the very first Pop Show produced in 1967, introducing the mini-skirt and go-go boots.

As an early reader, Julie became a Shakespeare buff when in lower elementary school. This was a keeper. Beginning in Junior High, every available Saturday afternoon was reserved to listen to The Metropolitan Opera on N.P.R. Opera continued to be an important part of her life. Julie was baptized at the Amherst Congregational, now U.C.C. Church in 1949, by Reverend J.W. Parks, starting her church experience with the primary department and continuing her teenage years during the troubled times of the 60's. This became the foundation of her never ending work for social justice.

Julie was a positive thinker and blessed with the gift of joy. Julie graduated from Lake Erie College, Painesville in 1971. She received a Fellowship to Ohio State University, where she met and married James Felty, father of daughter Nancy. Moving to Massachusetts, she received a Master of Divinity from Andover-Newton School of Theology and continued on to New England Baptist School of Nursing, receiving her RN Degree and then her Masters of Nursing from Emmanuel College of Boston. This combination of Degrees evolved into a successful and dedicated career where Julie Became a RNCS and Psychiatric Nurse Clinical Specialist in Psychotherapy, Psychopharmacology and Clinical Supervision. Even though Julie lived in the Boston area of Massachusetts, she remained close to her Ohio family. Whenever an unsolvable family issue arose, two words from her Mom were said - "CALL JULIE" and with Julie's love, knowledge and wisdom she always came through.

Julie is survived by her Life Partner, Doctor Susan Rodman Donaldson; daughter, Dr. Nancy (Ken) McKinney; grandson, James Rodman McKinney of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts; mother, Mary Powers Miller; sister, Elizabeth Dean Miller Szefcyk; brothers, Norman Brydon (Shelley) Miller and Joel Powers (Marcia) Miller, all of Amherst; aunt, Cora Miller Godfrey of North Carolina; many loved nieces, nephews, cousins; and dear friend from high school, Poet, Author Michael Finley of St. Paul, Minnesota.
