Malcolm D. McDonald

Malcolm D. McDonald, 94, of Elyria, died Thursday, October 3, 2013, at Hamlet Atrium, Chagrin Falls. He was born January 21, 1919 in Elyria and was a lifelong Elyria resident.

He was a 1937 graduate of Elyria High School, attended Ohio State University, and graduated from Baldwin Wallace College. Malcolm served with the U.S. Navy during World War II on a hospital ship USS Solace in the South Pacific. He was employed for 30 years as a budget analyst at Ford Motor Company, Brookpark, retiring in 1980 and served on Elyria City Council from 1962 to 1968.

Mal was a member and Past Commander of both Elyria V.F.W. #1079 and Elyria American Legion Post 12. He was the oldest and longest tenured member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. He was also a member of Elyria Moose Lodge #798 and Elyria Elks Lodge #465. He was an avid reader and a student of history. Other interests included travel, gardening, fishing, golfing and bowling.

Malcolm is survived by children, Anne (Pete) Peterson of Chagrin Falls, Jane (Jeff) Wenham of Gates Mills, Charles (Diane) McDonald of Winnetka, Illinois, Thomas McDonald of Elyria and Gaye Suver of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; grandchildren, Kate (Jim) Clancy, Bradford (Katie) Peterson, Jeffrey (Kate) Wenham, Elizabeth (Patrick) Flannery and Brian, Laura and Jane McDonald; and a great grandson, Jack Wenham.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Frances M. McDonald in 2007; and parents, Charles and Grace McDonald.

Friends will be received Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 4 to 6 P.M., at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. A memorial service will be Monday, October 7, 2013, at 2 P.M., at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 330 Second St., Elyria, OH 44035 with Reverend Alana Kelley officiating. Elyria V.F.W. #1079 will also present military honors at the church.
