Cecil Chapman Donovan

Cecil Chapman Donovan, 90, of Elyria, died Monday, September 16, 2013 at LifeCare Center of Westlake, under the care of Crossroads Hospice. Cecil was born April 17, 1923 in Sullivan. Elyria had been his home since 1937.

He served in the United States Army Aircorp during World War II, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. One of his many duties during the war was to bring in ammunition for the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Elyria, where he assisted in the planning, fundraising and building of its addition.

Cecil was a supervisor at General Motors, Terex Division in Cleveland, retiring in 1987. He was a lifetime member of the Elyria VFW Post 1079 joining in 1950. Cecil was also a former member of the Elyria Eagles, the Elyria Elks, and the Elks golf and bowling teams. When his sons were young, Cecil coached Elyria Little League East.

He is survived by two sons, Greg (Kate) Donovan of Lithopolis, Ohio and Jeff (Anita) Donovan of Elyria; two daughters, Cyndy (Keith, deceased) McCann of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Amy (Kyle) Giunta of Elyria; grandchildren, Kate Brancheau, Erin (Beatrice) Donovan, Brian (Natalie) Donovan, Brianne (Brett) Stone, Nick Giunta, Hannah Giunta and Tracy Triplett; great grandchildren, Audrey and Michael Brancheau, Silas and Liam Donovan and Kaylee Stone; sister-in-law, Dorothy Essex; many nieces and nephews. Also, a thank you to niece, Karen (Gary) Cohagan for all of the cards and visits treasured by Dad.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Donovan (nee Molich) on June 28, 2008; brother, Mervin Donovan; sister, Louise Watson; and parents, Virgil and Thelma Donovan (nee Chapman).

The family will receive friends Friday, October 4, 2013 at Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, from 12 Noon to 1 P.M. with a service immediately following. Reverend Kathy Ketchum will officiate. Burial will follow at Brookdale Cemetery, where the VFW Post 1079 will provide full military honors.
