Rose Marie Smith (nee McCloskey), 92, of Grafton, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, in Lorain, surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 30, 1920 in Grafton, where she was a lifelong resident.
Rose was a 1938 graduate of Grafton High School, where she was a cheerleader. During World War II and prior to raising her family, she was employed at General Industries, Bendix and Larson Foundry. After all of her children started school, Rose was employed as a sales clerk for the Higbee Company and Grafton Pharmacy. She was a lifetime member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church (formerly Immaculate Conception) in Grafton and was a past member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, traveling and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughters, Stephanie Smith of Grafton, Kathleen (Kevin) Swartz, of Millersville, Maryland, Mary Margaret (Arthur) Atherton of Avon Lake, and Michelle (Donnie) Rader of Valley City; sons, Richard J. (Freda) Smith, Jr. and Thomas Smith of Grafton and Kevin Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, Richard (Janelle) Smith of Temple, Texas, Robert (Lisa) Smith of Vaughnsville, Ohio, Jonathon and Thomas Smith of Lititz, Pennsylvania, Katherine Atherton of Lakewood, Colin Atherton of Columbus, Kara, Don and Timothy Rader of Valley City; four great grandsons and many loving nieces and nephews.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Smith, Sr.; infant son, Timothy Paul Smith; parents, Thomas and Mabel McCloskey (nee Wilson); sisters, Naomi McCloskey and Anna Jean Tobin; and brothers, Thomas, Wilson and John McCloskey.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 15, 2013, 1 until 6 P.M., at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria. Closing prayers will be Monday, September 16, 2013, at 9:30 A.M., in the funeral home, followed by a 10 A.M., Mass of Christian Burial in the chapel of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 708 Erie St., Grafton. The Reverend Father Charles Diedrick, Pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Elyria, will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Grafton.
