He was born March 5, 1917 in Cleveland, and was a 1935 graduate of Elyria High School. He was also a graduate of Miami University and Harvard Law School.
During WWII, Robert served in the U.S. Army 526th Armored Infantry Battalion Tank Unit and participated in the Liberation of Belgium. He entered the service as a Private and was discharged as a Major. Among other awards, he received the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He had practiced law for 25 years and during that time served as Assistant Solicitor and Law Director of the City of Elyria; Law Director of the Village of LaGrange, Village of Sheffield and City of North Ridgeville. He was State Senator for six years; Special Assistant, Ohio Attorney General 10 years; member of Ohio Electoral College; member of Ohio Civil Service Study Commission and a member of the Ohio Comprehensive Health Planning Advisory Council. He was elected Lorain County Common Pleas Judge, Probate Division in 1978, where he served until retiring in 1990. As a judge, he was a member of and chairman of the Lorain County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (169 board) and member and chairman of Lorain County Board of Mental Health (648 board). He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elyria and Elyria American Legion Post 12. He enjoyed the Cleveland Orchestra, theatre and was a Cleveland Indians and Ohio State University Buckeyes Football fan. He loved spending time with this family, especially Sunday dinners with his grandchildren.
Judge Corts is survived by a son, Rob F. (Denise) Corts of Amherst; daughters, Beth Corts and Susan (Jerry) Everhard, both of Elyria and Janice (Ed) Dolan of Titusville, Florida; grandchildren, Elizabeth (A.J.) Sands, Meagan (Alex) Mitchell and Emily and Robby Corts; and a great granddaughter, Patricia Sands.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann (nee Bremer) in 1983; grandson, Sean Dolan; parents, Robert and Helen Corts; sisters, Margaret Simon and Ruth Rothel and brothers, Richard and Jack Corts.
Friends will be received Wednesday, August 28, 2013, from 4 to 7 P.M., at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. A funeral service will be Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 11 A.M., at First United Methodist Church, 312 Third Street, Elyria, with Reverend Dalton D. Love officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, where Elyria V.F.W. #1079 will conduct military honors.
