Martin C. "Marty" Haas

Martin C. "Marty" Haas passed away peacefully in Bradenton, Florida, June 22, 2013. He was born in Cleveland, and raised in North Ridgeville.

Marty was taught by the Notre Dame Nuns in the eighth grade at St. Peter School in North Ridgeville. He continued his education at Elyria Catholic High School, graduating in the class of 1956. He attended Case Western Reserve University, and proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Marty worked for The Ridge Tool Co. in Elyria, Erie, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and St. Truiden, Belgium, before starting his own company; Iroquois Tool Systems in North East, Pennsylvania. He built the company from one employee to over 175. Marty continued his entrepreneurial path throughout his life, later founding additional companies including; REMMCO and KaMaHa Farms, growing apples, peaches, and grapes. He always felt blessed to be able to work with some of the finest people in the world. He was a member of St. Mary Star of Sea on Longboat Key, Florida. While growing up in Ridgeville with his family, he helped garden, weeding, picking, and manning the vegetable stand, Animals had to be tended too. There were neighborhood games, and fishing in the creek. He enjoyed visits from our "city cousins", showing them the in and outs of farming. He joined his brothers and sisters and used to walk from their home on Race Rd. to St. Peter's for First Fridays with the Diederichs during the summer. Marty and Marilyn purchased a condominium when he wintered in Florida, coming back in the spring to work at the company and farm. While in Florida, he missed not being able to "get his hands dirty" so he looked for a place and found it in Bradenton. He had a successful little garden and enjoyed the orange and grapefruit trees. He befriended the owner of a forge and thoroughly enjoyed working with iron. Eventually, after the death of the owner, he purchased it, and his son, Martin took over. They remade the gates at the Ringling Mansion in Sarasota, as well as other iron works in the area. He will be remembered with always having a smile and willing to help others.

Marty is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marilyn; a daughter, Kara; a son, Martin; two brothers, Robert and Joseph; three sisters, Mary Tkalcec (Carl) and Helen Hutman (Don), all of Ohio, and Sister Lucia Haas S.N.D. of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Edith Haas; and two brothers, Lawrence and Richard.

Burial will be private in Sarasota National Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 A.M., Saturday, July 27, 2013, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 35777 Center Ridge Rd., North Ridgeville, where Reverend Father Robert J. Franco, Pastor, will be the Celebrant.

Memorial contributions, in Marty's memory, can be sent to Elyria Catholic High School Endowment Fund, 725 Gulf Rd., Elyria, OH 44035.
