Max C. Hughes

Max C. Hughes of Henrietta Twp. passed away Friday, July 19, 2013. Max was born July 29, 1939, in Kopperston, West Virginia.

He was raised in Pax, West Virginia, and attended school there until moving to Ohio in 1956. He lived in Henrietta Township for the past 39 years.

He worked at American Ship Yard until it closed. He and his wife owned the Woolly Bear Restaurant in Birmingham, Ohio until December 31, 2012. Max loved playing cards, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Zelma Hughes (nee Sheppard); his sons, Larry (Sherry) Hughes of Amherst, and Mike Hughes of Berlin Heights; his daughter, Cindy (Corky) Knott of Wakeman; his brothers, Howard (Brenda) Hughes and Thomas (Jane) Hughes both of Pax, West Virginia; his sisters, Donna (Albert) Brewer of Vermilion, Kaye (Gary) Weaver of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Jane (Mike) Conlin of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and 17 nieces and nephews.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, John and Josephine (Humphrey) Hughes of Pax, West Virginia.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 1 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst, Ohio.
