Laverne Kolbe Burke

Laverne Kolbe Burke, 101, of Avon Lake, died Saturday, May 26, 2013 at her residence, after a five month illness.

Mrs. Burke was a research psychologist in Washington, D.C. in the U.S. Department of Labor from 1935 until 1943 and in the U.S. Department of Defense from 1947 until 1971. She had received a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1934 and a Master’s degree in Psychology from the Ohio State University in 1935.

She was a member of the American Statistical Association, the American Psychological Association and the Psychometric Society. She moved back from Washington, D.C. in 2000 and enjoyed reading, quilting, and calligraphy. Laverne celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her friends from Towne Center Community Campus.

Laverne will be loved and missed by all who knew her especially her caregivers, Mary and Kaye.

There are no immediate survivors.

She was preceded in death by her father, George W. Kolbe on February 12, 1969; her mother, Anna (Eggert) Kolbe on August 15, 1973; her brother. Walter A. Kolbe on June 18, 1979; and her husband, James H. Burke on May 7, 1996.

Arrangements were made by the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, Amherst.
