Charles C. Sheppard

Charles Campbell Sheppard passed away Sunday morning, April 28, 2013, at Kendal at Oberlin in Oberlin. He was born in New Jersey on May 17, 1916.

He attended and earned a bachelor’s degree at Ohio State University, a Master’s degree at the University of Michigan and a PhD in agricultural economics at Michigan State University. He was a member of the faculty of the Poultry Science Department in the College of Agriculture at MSU from 1946 until his retirement in 1978. He was the author of numerous papers on advances in poultry science and modern management techniques for the poultry industry. Charles also served as an extension agent for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the State of Michigan throughout his career at MSU. In addition, he participated in three overseas economic aid missions, the first to Columbia, South America in 1954, the second to Nigeria, Africa in 1967 and the third to India in 1977.

Charles and his wife Irene were long-time residents of Haslett, Michigan, where they helped to organize and found the Haslett Community Church. Following his retirement, Charles and Irene divided their time between a winter home in Lake Wales, Florida and a summer home on Lake Avalon, near Hillman, Michigan. They were active members of the Hillman United Methodist Church and Charles remained so until the day he died. Charles enjoyed fishing, traveling, and playing golf and even managed to get out on a course at age 96.

He is survived by three daughters, Suzanne Flood (Dennis) of Oberlin, Dianne Sheppard of Haslett, Michigan and Joanne Bachelder (Errol) of Milford, Michigan; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, four nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Mae Sheppard (nee Myers); and his three brothers, Ike, Mel and Ralph.

A memorial service will be held at 2 P.M., Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Kendal at Oberlin.
