Leon J. St. Marie

Leon J. St. Marie, 71, of Elyria, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family and under the watchful care of Hospice of the Western Reserve on Monday, March 25, 2013. Mr. St. Marie suffered five years from pulmonary fibrosis. He was born August 6, 1941 in Sandusky, to Gene and Mildred (Crowe) St. Marie.

Mr. St. Marie graduated in 1959 from Elyria Catholic High School and attended John Carroll University. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Elyria and a former member of the Elyria Country Club. Mr. St. Marie entered the insurance business in 1965 under the tutelage of the late Victor F. Stewart, Jr. He eventually opened the St. Marie Agency and was the first agent in Lorain County to achieve the distinction of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) in 1975. Mr. St. Marie was the founder of Skysurance Agency at Lorain County Regional Airport. He was the president of the Mechanical Warranty Insurance Agency, Cascade Title Agency, Ltd., and Clientele Gifts, Inc., all located in Elyria.

Leon held a particular love of music, camping, travel and foreign language studies. He hosted many Spanish speaking students in his home and traveled throughout the world most notably flying his single engine plane to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and El Salvador.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary Brigid "Biddy" (nee McGowan); son, Matthew (Stephanie) St. Marie of Elyria; daughters, Michelle St. Marie of Beverly Hills, California, Jill (Col. Bradley) Hoagland of Burke, Virginia, Kathleen "Kitty" (Wade) Pinter of Elyria, and Laura (Blake) Jackson of San Jose, California; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Dr. Gene St. Marie of Jacksonville, Florida, Rev. Fr. Denis L. St. Marie of South Amherst and Thomas A. St. Marie of Elyria; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jere St. Marie of Elyria; and sisters, Mary Ann Bierbower and Nadine Davis.

In respect of Holy Week, there will be no visitation. A Memorial Mass will be Monday April 1, 2013 at 11 A.M. at St. Mary Church, 320 Middle Ave., Elyria. The Mass will be concelebrated by the Rev. Charles Diedrick, Pastor, Rev. Thomas Hagedorn, Rev. Denis L. St. Marie, and the Rev. Mr. Patrick Humphrey. Private burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria. The St. Marie family will greet friends after the Mass in the Church hall.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary Church or Elyria Catholic High School, 725 Gulf Rd., Elyria.
