Freddi J. Townsend, 59, departed this life on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 23, 1954. The family moved to Lorain, Ohio in 1962, where she had since resided.
She attended Charleston Elementary, Masson Junior High, and graduated from Admiral King High School in 1972. She was a former cashier at Kroger Supermarket and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church of Lorain, having served as a former church secretary and clerk.
Freddi was on the Medical Advisory Board of the Kidney Foundation of Ohio. She was active with the Patient Activity Committee for dialysis patients in Lorain County and, while a patient, served as co-chairperson of the patient support group. Freddi was a past patient representative for the Renal Network, which covers four states, and was past secretary of the Kidney Foundation of Lorain County before it merged with the Kidney Foundation of Ohio. She was also chairperson of the annual health fair held at Friendship Baptist Church in partnership with the Parish Nursing of Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain.
Freddi was a recipient of three kidney transplants. The most successful was on December 17, 2002. She felt, after waiting 14 years for a transplant, her purpose in life was to do everything she could to promote donor awareness and to support and encourage others during their wait and transplant surgery.
Freddi is survived by five sisters, Alnetta Crosby of Boston Massachusetts, Emma Lenton of Detroit Michigan, Princella Townsend and Linda Kay (Namon M) Tarpley of Lorain and Cassandra Townsend of Louisville, Kentucky; two brothers, Willie Townsel of Detroit, Michigan and Floyd Townsend of South Euclid; several loving aunts, uncles, cousin, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Florine Townsend; her grandparents; and three brothers, Charles Woods, Gordon Townsend and Lynn Jay Townsend.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 22, 2013 from 6 to 9 P.M. and Saturday, March 23, 2013 from 10 A.M. until time of funeral service at 11 A.M. at Friendship Baptist Church, 2160 Reeves Ave., Lorain, Rev. John R. Jackson, Eulogist. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
