James W. Rider, of Avon, beloved husband of Colleen (Hebbard) for 56 years, passed on to his heavenly home on Monday, March 11, 2013. He was born August 18, 1932, to John and Pauline (Brockman) Rider.
He graduated from Fairview Park High School, where he played football, belonged to the Square Dance Club, and was a Boy Scout. He attended Ohio State University before serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years. After 32 years at Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., he retired to become the owner of Blue Chip Beverage in Avon, where he and Colleen worked side by side. Jim relished his business and his day to day interaction with his customers. He delighted in being called Santa by many children, and also enjoyed woodworking, architectural drawing, and the outdoors.
Jim was strongly committed to helping others, volunteering as a member of Avon Historical Society, the Festival of Flowers, and for many years with Clothe A Child.
Jim laughed with and lived for his wife, Colleen; and his four children, Joann Rider of Lorain, Kathleen (Shawn) McNally of Avon, Robert and Raymond, both of Avon. He is also survived by six granddaughters, Kili, Rosalee, Catherine, Aleta, Caitlin, and Meghan; his sister, Jan Brooks of Grafton; and two nieces, Jeanie Sizemore of Grafton, and Laura Tanehal of Seven Hills.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 10 A.M., at St. Mary of the Immaculte Conception Catholic Church, 2640 Stoney Ridge Rd., Avon. (Meet at the Church) Interment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Avon, where full military honors will be conducted.
