Carl E. Chapman, Sr.

Carl E. Chapman, Sr., 71, of Elyria, passed away at EMH Healthcare Wednesday, March 13, 2013, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 19, 1941 in Chapmanville, West Virginia.

Carl served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962, stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He served in Southeast Asia and West Germany. Carl retired in 1992, after 30 years of employment, at the GM Parma Chevy Plant.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Elyria Ward, since 1965; the American Legion Post 12; Amvets of Elyria; USO sponsoring member; a National Red Cross disaster volunteer, serving in 65 national disasters including 9/11 at the Pentagon, and in New York City; charter member of national WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana; retired UAW Local 1005 in Parma; and a NRA member.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and time spent watching his grandkids at sporting events.

Mr. Chapman is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce A. Chapman (nee Adkins) of Elyria; son, Carl E. Chapman, Jr. (Wendy) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and daughters, Dawn M. Chapman Farley (Tom) of Elyria, and Sheila L. Chapman Bursley (Paul) of Clarksfield; his special buddy - his dog "JJ"; 11 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Nelson (Charles) of Ravenswood, West Virginia, Betty Bentley (Noah) of Wadsworth, Molly Brown (Leonard) of Cottageville, West Virginia, Mary Ramsey (Bill) of Canal Winchester, Ohio; and many nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert G. and Goldie (nee Lucas) Chapman; brothers, Emil J. Dial and Charles Dial.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M., Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at The Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church, 12090 Durkee Rd., Grafton. Funeral service will be held at 11 A.M., Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at the church. Bishop Ray Anderson will officiate. Interment will follow at Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Eaton Township. Military honors will be performed by the VFW Post 1079 of Elyria.
