Richard W. "Dick" Dowdell, 86, of Elyria Twp., passed away Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Elyria Wesleyan Village, following a brief illness. He was born November 5, 1926 in Elyria and was a lifelong Elyria resident.
Dick was employed at the former General Motors Fisher Guide in Elyria as a stationary engineer for 26 years, retiring in 1990. He was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Elyria, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Senior Club. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army during WWII, was a 1946 graduate of Elyria High School, a member of the Elyria Senior Fellowship, Lorain County Computer Users Group, the Lake Erie Beekeepers and Lorain County Beekeepers assc's., and the Elyria YMCA, where he volunteered with the swim program for Elyria Schools Special Needs Children. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing cards, reading, dancing, beekeeping and most of all, spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Jane (nee Obringer); daughters, Dr. Mary Ann Dowdell of Oneonta, New York, Margaret Dowdell of Columbus, Nancy Dowdell of Elyria and Rita (Jim) McAllister of Orrville; sons, Joseph Dowdell of DeLeon, Florida and Richard (Cathy) Dowdell of Bozeman, Montana; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brothers, Theodore Dowdell of Elyria Twp., and John Dowdell of Wellington; and lifelong best friend, Herman Kelling of Elyria Twp.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Agnes Krystowski, Lillian Walker, Rose Schwinn, Patricia (Sister Mary Rita Therese, S.N.D), and Eileen Dowdell; and brother, Bernard Dowdell.
The family will receive friends Thursday, January 17, 2013 from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria, where a Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 4 P.M. led by Rev. Fr. John Seabold. A Memorial Mass will be Friday, January 18, 2013 at 10 A.M. at St. Agnes Church, 611 Lake Ave., Elyria. The Rev. Fr. Albert Veigas, Pastor, will be the Celebrant. Burial will be private.
