Charlie Thomas Hammond

Charlie Thomas Hammond, 85, and a resident of Amherst, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain, following a sudden illness. He was born October 6, 1927 in Kidder, Kentucky. Charlie had made his home in Amherst for the last 62 years.

His primary focus in life was that of a husband and father, along with working as a job setter at Ridge Tool in Elyria for 42 years, before retiring in 1992. Charlie proudly served in the United States Army, he was deployed to Japan during the Allied occupation after World War II. Charlie was a hard worker and loved working with his hands, he was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed his remodeling projects. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed keeping a meticulous yard. Charlie enjoyed talking politics, his work experiences and sharing the Bible with family and friends.

Charlie leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 64 years, Jean Hammond (nee Richardson); his son and his wife, Steve R. and Kathy Hammond of Stow, Ohio; his daughter, Brenda G. Hammond of LaGrange; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren and his brother, Smiley Hammond of South Amherst.

He was preceded in death by his son, Charles G. Hammond on December 19, 2007; his brothers, Zackie, Herman, Sherman and Riley; his sisters, Mary, Lora; an infant sister; and his parents, Freeman and Nora Hammond (nee Flynn).

Friends may call Sunday, January 13, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral service will be held Monday, January 14, 2013 at 10 A.M in the funeral home. The Rev. Farrell Keith, Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in South Amherst, will officiate. Full Military Honors will be performed by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
