Ernest W. "Ernie" Scheuffler

Ernest W. "Ernie" Scheuffler, age 91, of LaGrange, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, November 21, 2012.

Born in Lorain, September 5, 1921, to the late Henry and Essel (nee Williamson) Scheuffler, Ernie had a strong work ethic and loved to serve in any community where he resided.

At age 21, Ernie enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard three different vessels during World War II, the Marine Eagle, Cape St. Elias, and a service and supply ship. His duties were to assemble machine guns on the sides of the ships. He sailed around the horn of South America, the horn of Africa, Eritrea, on to Cairo, Egypt, and then the Red Sea. Ernie was at the Battle of Normandy, France on a Navy supply ship that served in the Omaha Beach invasion. His valiant service earned him a Bronze Star and American Theatre-Asiatic and Pacific Ribbon.

Following his enlistment, Ernie played minor league baseball in Orlando, Florida at the Washington Senators Training Camp at Tinker Baseball Field. After working for Holmes Construction in Lorain, he went to work for Zilch Funeral Home in Amherst, in 1945. He became a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer while employed there. Over the next few years, Ernie moved around and worked for a couple different funeral homes, finally settling down with his family in Lorain County in the early 1950s.

In the early 1960s, Ernie began working at Lorain County's oldest funeral home, Sudro-Curtis in Elyria. Eventually Ernie became a co-owner and operator of the funeral home alongside Harvey Curtis, and the name became Sudro-Curtis-Scheuffler. In 1977, Ernie became the sole owner, and he ran the funeral home until he retired in 1988. Ernie cherished his time spent in funeral service, and found his connection with the families and clergy of Lorain County to be very rewarding. He felt privileged to have met all the wonderful people through his work as a funeral director, and to help them during such a difficult time. He also enjoyed sponsoring numerous Little League Baseball teams in Elyria.

Ernie was a member of Elyria Lodge #787 (former Frank S. Harmon Lodge), El Rey Grotto - Lorain County Shrine Club, and a life member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland and Al Koran Shrine Temple of Cleveland. He was a life member of American Legion Post #12 and VFW Post #1079, and F.O.P.A. Lodge #98, and the Elks Lodge #456 in Elyria. He was a past President of the Elyria Noon Lions Club, and a past member of the Lorain County Funeral Directors and Embalmers. He belonged to the Ohio Embalmers Association and the Ohio Funeral Directors Association. He was a former long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Elyria and Grace Methodist Church of Vermilion, and a current member of LaPorte United Methodist Church in LaGrange.

Surviving him is his wife, Carolyn Lee (nee Merrill) Scheuffler of LaGrange; son, Rodney Scheuffler of Euclid; stepdaughter, Jackie Grossman (Kenneth) of Lorain; stepsons, Kevin Shaw of Elyria, and Jason Kayden of LaGrange; four grandchildren, Amanda Edwards (Noah), Brandon Grossman, Terry Kayden, and Kelsey Smith; two great-granddaughters, Cassidy and Gabriella Edwards; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eda Mae Scheuffler (1990); son, Gregory A. Scheuffler (2002); and sisters, Thelma Vick and Ruth Kiefer.

Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 114 Second St., Elyria, on Sunday, November 25, 2012, from 4 until 8 P.M., and before the Service on Monday, November 26, 2012, from 10 until 11 A.M. Funeral Service will begin at 11 A.M., Monday, with Reverend Jonathan McCleary, Pastor of LaPorte United Methodist Church, officiating.
