Raymundo de la Pena, M.D.

Raymundo de la Pena, M.D., 87, of Elyria, passed away Monday, October 8, 2012, at EMH Healthcare following a sudden illness.

He was born in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico on August 20, 1925. He received his medical education from the University of Nuevo Leon, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and pursued post graduate Internship and Residency programs in General Practice and Surgery from the O.V.L. Hospital, Buffalo, New York and EMH Healthcare, Elyria.

During a distinguished 50 year career of providing patient care to residents of Elyria and surrounding Lorain County communities, Dr. de la Pena achieved many professional accolades including Chief of Staff, EMH Healthcare Hospital, President, Lorain County Medical Society and being the recipient of the 50 Year Award from the Ohio State Medical Association in 2003.

Professional associations include membership in the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, Ohio State Medical Association, Lorain County Medical Society and the Medical Staff of Elyria Memorial Hospital (currently, EMH Healthcare).

Active in the community, Dr. de la Pena volunteered at the Lorain County Free Clinic and was a member of the Elyria County Club, Elyria Rotary and St. Jude Catholic Church, Elyria.

He is survived by two children, son, Raymundo J. de la Pena, M.D. of Sheffield Village and daughter, Beatrice de la Pena of Elyria; four grandchildren, Alexander, Anthony and Alyssa de la Pena and James Allen. The youngest of 12 children, he is also survived by one sister, Carmela Duenas of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Beatrice (nee McClements); daughter, Rebecca; his parents, Jose Maria and Guadalupe (nee Rodriquez) de la Pena of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico and 10 siblings.

Friends will be received at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, on Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 4 until 8 P.M. Closing prayers will be in the funeral home on Friday, October 12, 2012 at 10:30 A.M., followed by 11 A.M. Mass at St. Jude Catholic Church, 590 Poplar Street, Elyria, with the Reverend Father Frank P. Kosem, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria.
