Julius S. Pondy

Julius S. Pondy, 90, of Elyria, died at home Thursday, March 15, 2012. Julius was born in Elyria and lived here all of his life.

He was a graduate of Elyria High School in 1939 and served with the U.S. Navy during WWII on the Combat Air Crewman Squadron, VC-93. He was a Ball Turret Gunner on TBM Torpedo Bomber. He received Distinguished Flying Cross with 4 Gold Stars, China War Memorial Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and in March of 2008 he received the Saipan Tinian 60th Anniversary Medal for Freedom from Japanese Occupation. He flew 54 combat missions in the Pacific Theatre off of Aircraft Carrier, Petrof Bay-Steamer Bay. He was shot down and landed on Okinawa Gunto during the Invasion of 1945.

Julius was a life member of the Magyar United Church of Christ, a life member of VFW, Post 1079, a member of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society, a member of the American Legion, Post 12, the Moose Lodge #778, and the Elyria Senior Fellowship. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener, and golfer, boasting a hole-in-one at Brentwood in 1992. He volunteered at Brecksville VA Hospital and Sandusky Veterans Home. A sports fan he followed Midview High School, the Ohio State Buckeyes the Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers. He also played on many different championship softball leagues as a 3rd baseman and pitcher and on championship golf leagues.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. (Palka), whom he married in 1952; children, Jay (Tina) Pondy of Appling, Georgia, Dory Crossfield of St. Augustine, Florida, and Jackie Pondy (Jeff Peterson) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and one granddaughter, Jessica Crossfield of St. Augustine, Florida.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Cribbs, Helen Liszak, and Jane Bogart; one brother, Albert Pondy; and his parents, Albert and Flora (nee Dohanyos) Pondy.

Friends will be received at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria, Monday, March 19, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Funeral service will be Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 10 A.M. at Magyar United Church of Christ, 6119 West River Road, South, Elyria, with Alana Kelley, Pastor, officiating (please meet at the church). Burial will be in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.
