Robert L. Baeder

Robert L. Baeder, 86, of Elyria, died Wednesday, November 28, 2007, at New Live Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain.

He was born February 16, 1921 in Cleveland and had been a 60-year resident of Elyria. He was a 1939  graduate of Lincoln High School and a 1947 graduate of Heidelberg College.

Bob was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Army Air Corps as a gunner stationed in Central Europe.

He was employed by the Elyria City Schools as a teacher and coach, and then was then a salesman for Harcourt Brace Publishing Company for 35 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a staunch supporter of Elyria High School athletics and he, along with his wife, were season ticket holders for 55 years in the same two seats at Ely Stadium.

Mr. Baeder was a member of Elyria Senior Men's Fellowship, Elyria V.F.W. Post 1079, Elyria Elks Lodge 465 and First Congregational United Church of Christ, Elyria.

He will be remembered for his love of sports, gardening, fine cuisine and sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane (nee Hawke); a son, David and his wife, Megan Baeder of Avon; daughters, Sandy Daniels of Vermilion, Peggy Wegner of Elyria and Barbara Thomas and husband Wayne of Falmouth, Mass.; and the apples of his eye, grandchildren, Brittany, Patrick and Andrew Baeder, Jaime and Chad Daniels, Tim Wegner, Gretchen Thomas and Abby Thomas Larson and husband Hans.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Marie (nee Alplanop) Baeder; brothers, Alfred and Carl Baeder; sister, Vi Steinberg and son-in-law, Richard Wagner.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 2007, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 330 Second Street, Elyria. The Rev. Christina Kukuk will officiate.

The family will receive friends in the Great Hall of the church following the service. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church or New Life Hospice, 5255 N. Abbe Road, Elyria, OH 44035.

Dicken Funeral Home, Elyria, is in charge of arrangements.
