Elyria Attorney Harry F. Butler, 85, of Carlisle Township, died Monday, November 5, 2007, at Fairview Grace Hospital, after a long illness. He was born in LaGrange Township on October 1, 1922. He had been a resident of Carlisle Township for 40 years.
He graduated from LaGrange High School in 1940, Baldwin-Wallace College in 1946 and Cleveland Marshall Law College.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elyria for 50 years.
Mr. Butler was admitted to practice law in 1952. He moved his law practice to Elyria after practicing in Cleveland for a short time. He was admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court and Federal District Court.
He was Past President of the Lorain County Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association Executive Committee, and a member of the Cleveland Bar Association. He was Acting Judge and the first Referee of the Elyria Municipal Court.Â He was Chairman of the Civil Service Commission for four years.
Mr. Butler was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946, including two years in Italy.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 12, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1079 and Past Commander of American Legion Post 350, a member of the LaGrange Hunting and Fishing Club, LaGrange Masonic Lodge 399, Al Koran Shrine, Elyria Elks Lodge 465, Society of Air Racing Historians, and Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity at Baldwin-Wallace College.
Mr. Butler was an avid pilot for 60 years and was an active member of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapters 225, 127 and 50. He received Man of the Year Award from the Experimental Aircraft Association national organization.
Mr. Butler is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joanna (nee Femley); a daughter, Susan (Craig) Butler-Kaczay of Bay Village; a son, Dana T. Butler of Vermilion; and grandchildren, Amanda and Andrew Kaczay and John Butler.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Edna (nee Martin) Butler; and sisters, Margaret Devereaux and Marian Anderson.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bauer-Laubenthal Funeral Home, Chestnut Ridge Road at state Route 57, Elyria, where there will be a Masonic service at 8:30 p.m.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Dan Reinke will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Elyria.
