Richard Gene Gunderson, 75, of South Amherst, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2007 at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home in Lorain, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 22, 1932 in El Paso, Wisconsin where he was raised, graduating from Spring Valley High School. After serving in the Marine Corp, he moved to Elyria and has been a resident of South Amherst since 1956.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict where he received the Korean Service Medal with one Star, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the U.N. National Defense Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Richard was employed with Ridge Tool in Elyria, retiring in 1997 as an assembler.
He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in South Amherst and the Elyria American Legion.
His hobbies included trap shooting, bowling, woodworking, making sports memorabilia, and he was a Cleveland Indians and Browns fan.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth "Sis" Gunderson (nee Wirth); his daughter, Kathleen Larimer of South Amherst; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his brother, Dalen Gunderson of El Paso, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Thomas Richard Larimer on October 5, 2001; and by his mother, Mable Gunderson.
Friends may call Sunday, November 4, 2007 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services with Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard performing honors will be held Monday, November 5, 2007 at 1 P.M. from St. John United Church of Christ, 416 Leonard St., South Amherst. Rev. Paul D. Eaton, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
