Emma Hovis (nee Salata), 93, of Elyria, died on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at Life Care Center of Elyria, following a long illness.
Mrs. Hovis was born in Berryburg, WV on December 23, 1913 and lived in Elyria most of her life. She and her husband, John, were owners of Hovis Grocery Store in Elyria on the corner of West Avenue and 9th Street for many years. She attended Elyria Public Schools and Elyria Business School. She was active in Franklin P.T.A. and also was a Girl Scout Leader. She was a member of the Elizabeth Steven's Circle, Order of Eastern Star Chapter #165, and Rainbow Mothers Club. For many years, she was the hostess at Graystone Hotel and manager of the Elks Public Dining room. Mrs. Hovis was the hostess at Spring Valley Country Club for many years. She was a volunteer at Elyria Memorial Hospital for 12 years and a member of the Volunteer Auxilary Board of Elyria Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Hovis was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elyria.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Kiger of Upper Arlington, and Susan (husband Peter) Blake of Bay Village; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Mary Rose Chappo of Elyria.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Hovis in 1973; two brothers, Joseph and Theodore Salata; and four sisters, Bertha Salata, Violet Polchey, Elizabeth Moore and Helen Kayden. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Suzanna (nee Illyes) Salata.
Friends will be received at the Reichlin-Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria on Sunday, September 30, 2007, from 5 to 8 P.M. Funeral Services will be on Monday, October 1, 2007 in the funeral home at 11 A.M. The Reverend Dalton Love, Associate Pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Elyria will officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery.
