Robert M. French, 81, of Jamestown, PA, formerly of Boardman, Westlake and Euclid, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2007 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Louisville, KY in 1926.
He joined the Marine Corp. at 17 years old and fought in the South Pacific, most notably in Iwo Jima.
He was also a member of the Cleveland Fire Dept., retiring after 27 years as a battalion chief.
He was an avid woodworker and furniture maker, and he enjoyed being a gentleman farmer and traveling in his later years. He built his house at the age of 65 with his family and friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy French (nee Hawes); son, Walter P. French; parents, Frank and Nora French of Hinkley; two brothers, James of Seville and Jack of Collierville, TN.
He is survived by his son, Robert F. French Sr. of Lorain; three grandchildren, Kimberly Morgan, Robert F. French Jr. of Elyria, and Tammy Bowles of LaGrange; brother, Vivon French of Scottsdale, AZ; five great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.
A mass service will be held at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Jamestown, PA on August 13, 2007 at 10 A.M. Burial will be at the Western Reserve National Military Cemetery in Rittman, OH on August 14, 2007 at 1 P.M.
