OBERLIN — Oberlin Schools Facilities Committee members received four options Thursday night for their long-awaited consolidation project.
While all options presented by Oberlin Schools Superintendent John Schroth have the same outcome — a new building that connects elementary, middle and high schools — they offer differing timelines and price tags.
One option would require constructing the entire 162,909-square-foot building at one time at a cost of $37.8 million. Other options included constructing the elementary school portion first at a cost of $11.2 million, constructing the sixth-12th grade part first at a cost of $26.6 million or constructing the high school portion first at a cost of $19.8 million.
While building the entire school at one time could be a more financially sound option in the long run, Schroth said it might be difficult for voters to accept the cost. A 12- to 15-mill levy on the May ballot would be required to complete the entire building at once, Schroth said.
Completing one phase first would mean the district could wait to see if it would receive $7 million from the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission to help pay for the rest of the construction.
In May, the district was told it would not receive the $7 million stipend this year. They are waiting to see whether the Facilities Commission will provide funding in the future, though Schroth said it is not a guarantee.
Members of the Facilities Committee could not decide on one option to present to the school board, but Schroth said he will bring the discussion to the next school board meeting on Tuesday.
