Chronicle-Telegram participates in Ice Bucket Challenge

You’ve probably seen it all over your social media feeds – your friends, sports teams and celebrities dumping buckets of freezing water over their heads.

The Ice Bucket Challenge, as it’s aptly called, invites people to pour a bucket of ice water over their heads, and then challenge others to do the same. In lieu of dousing themselves with frigid water, individuals challenged can make a donation to fight ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has succeeded in raising both awareness and donations for the ALS Association. Between July 29 and Aug. 12, the association has received $4 million in donations, compared to $1.12 million during the same period.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative,” Association President and CEO Barbara Newhouse said in a press release on the association’s website.

"While the monetary donations are absolutely incredible, the visibility that this disease is getting as a result of the challenge is truly invaluable,” she added. “People who have never before heard of ALS are now engaged in the fight to find treatments and a cure for ALS."

The Chronicle-Telegram has joined this challenge, donating $100 to ALS while also participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge.

The Chronicle-Telegram’s general manager Bill Hudnutt, chief photographer Bruce Bishop, web editor Karie Spaetzel, reporter Jon Wysochanski, sports reporter Shaun Bennett and maintenance worker Kevin Hill had buckets of ice water dumped on them from the building’s roof by members of the circulation department.

The Chronicle-Telegram now challenges Elyria Schools, the city of Elyria and University Hospitals-Elyria Medical Center. We’ll give these organizations until next Friday to make a $10 donation to ALS and have employees complete the challenge, or make a $100 donation to ALS without completing the challenge.
