Sony picks up locally filmed comedy 'The Bronze'

Even as local filming continues for the Melissa Rauch comedy “The Bronze,” word came Wednesday that the project has been picked up by Sony Pictures for distribution.

An announcement from Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions said the comedy, which is being made by Duplass Brothers Productions, has been acquired for distribution.

“We fell instantly for the vulgar yet lovable Hope Greggory (Rauch),” Joe Matukewicz, senior vice president of acquisitions for Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, said in a statement.

“The plan with Sony picking up the film is that they are looking for a theatrical release,” Steve Campanella said.

Campanella, who heads the Cleveland-based Belltower Productions, is serving as a production supervisor for the film, which began a planned month-long shooting schedule in the Lorain County area recently.

The production has so far shot scenes in Amherst and locations including the Pikewood Manor Mobile Home Park in Elyria.

Described as a comedy about a foul-mouthed ex-gymnastics medalist fighting for her celebrity status when challenged by a rising young star, “The Bronze” stars Rauch, who is a principal of the ensemble cast of CBS-TV’s hit “The Big Bang Theory” sitcom.

The film co-stars Gary Cole, whose extensive credits include “Office Space” and scores of TV appearances on series including “The West Wing,” “The Good Wife,” “Family Guy” and “Veep”; Sebastian Stan (“The Black Swan” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”); and Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”).

Duplass Brothers Productions include “Jeff, Who Lives at Home, the forthcoming “The Skeleton Twins” starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader.

Co-written by Rauch and her husband Winston Rauch, the film is being directed by Academy Award-nominated director Bryan Buckley (“The Asad”), who also has 40-plus Super Bowl commercials to his name.

Buckley’s name is also associated with the upcoming Lionsgate comedy “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus,” which is set to star Reese Witherspoon.
