Fireworks return to Elyria tonight

ELYRIA — Today, it’s all about the boom.

Crews spent much of Tuesday setting mortar shells, wiring explosives and readying West Park for an early Independence Day celebration.

Residents can thank private and corporate donations for this year’s show. More than $45,000 was raised through a campaign led by Mayor Holly Brinda.

Elyria’s 2014 Salute to America: The Great American Picnic and Fireworks Show is 4 to 11 p.m. today at West Park, 1200 Foster Ave.

The park will open to the public at 4 p.m., with a picnic beginning at 4:30 p.m. when concession stands and vendors open. Elyria vendors offering food include CoFields Barbecue, Marco’s Pizza, Donna’s Diner, Sambino’s Pizza, By The Slab and Hershey’s Ice Cream.

Elyria parks and recreation staff will provide family games, activities, face painting and more 6 to 7:45 p.m. Yellow Delicious will provide live entertainment 8 to 9:30 p.m.

Brinda will give a welcome address at 9:30 p.m. and introduce the presenting sponsors. American Legion Post 12 will present the colors for the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Elyria High graduate JC Conley performing the Star Spangled Banner.

The fireworks show will begin about 10 p.m. and last about a half-hour.

Attendees may bring blankets, beach towels, tarps, lawn chairs, personal-size umbrellas, sealed water bottles, wagons and coolers into the park.

Parking and traffic will be restricted in much of the area. See our parking map for more information.
