ELRYIA — A new furniture store is being proposed for the Chestnut Commons retail area, which is home to a Walmart Supercenter, Cleveland Clinic medical and surgery center and several small stores and restaurants.
This will be the first major building project in that area in years. What is being proposed on the west side of the shopping area is an 18,180-square-foot retail strip that will be anchored by a 6,400-square-foot Levin Mattress store, a subdivision of Levin Furniture.
The building will also have space for seven additional tenants, which Mayor Holly Brinda hopes will include at least one restaurant.
“I know the size and kind of building being proposed will have the kind of sprinkler system that would make the building suitable for restaurants, day cares and retail stores,” she said.
Brinda said in recent months there has been lots of speculation about potential development in the area, and she is very happy to see there is a buzz about town for construction.
“It’s what we want. We are trying to do what we can to be as business friendly as possible,” she said. “We want to send the message loud and clear that Elyria is open for business.”
To help encourage development, Brinda said the city has abated some portions of the design review process and guidelines in an effort to blend the city’s need to maintain a high standard for construction projects while making it affordable to build in the city. The changes also include changes to signage and material requirements.
This newest project will go before the city Planning Commission 11 a.m. Tuesday. Brinda said she anticipates it could be under construction this summer.
Councilman Mark Jessie, D-3rd Ward, said the new stores should be a perfect mix to the shopping complex.
“I think anytime you can get solid development it is a great thing,” he said.
A project to bring a gas station to the northwest corner of Chestnut Ridge Road and state Route 57 is still in development.
“The tricky part about that project is the parcel is in three different municipalities — Eaton Township, Carlisle Township and the city of Elyria,” Brinda said. “A lot of work needs to be done in terms of infrastructure and other issues. Likely Elyria, being the largest municipality, will have to assist. We want to figure out a fair and equitable way to move this development along.”
