ELYRIA — Lorain County Community College is consolidating academic divisions for the upcoming school year as a part of a plan that will save the institution $2 million.
The plan is part of the college’s “Transformations Process,” which began four months ago with collaborative conversations between faculty, staff and students, said Tracy Green, vice president of strategic and institutional development.
The aim is to be more like the college’s peers in a way that is efficient and effective for LCCC, she said.
The takeaway from the consolidation will be the loss of three college administrative and two support positions. However, no courses or programs will be cut, and the faculty will not be affected.
“We have operated for many years with the same academic structure, and this consolidation helps us create better pathways for completion for our students,” Green said. “We are going from eight academic divisions down to five, but the five will be aligned in terms of content and purpose.”
The three divisions being merged are Health, Physical Education and Recreation, the Academic Foundation and the Business Division.
HPER will be aligned with Allied Health and Nursing, and the Business Division will join with Engineering and Information Technology and the Division of Social Sciences and Human Services. The Academic Foundation will go into Science and Mathematics Division.
The deans of those divisions will take on greater responsibility and a larger student load. Students will be served in the same capacity but will have different deans, Green said.
“Realignment makes sense,” Green said. “The coursework, degrees and certificates stay the same, but students progress much smoother through content areas. This is something we knew we had to do back in 2013 and have taken the time to launch it in a collaborative way.”
The consolidation will take effect July 1.
Green said the college is also going through its annual budgeting process and, as a part of the transformation process, money, jobs and initiatives that were temporary or supported through grants will not be absorbed into the college’s budget. Open positions will not be filled, Green said.
