LAGRANGE — Beck Suppliers Inc., based in Fremont, will soon be opening another FriendShip food store in Lorain County — this one on North Street in LaGrange.
Mayor Kim Strauss confirmed the purchase of a 1.55-acre lot between the IGA shopping plaza and U.S. Grant Street. The Lorain County auditor’s website stated the property had a $30,060 market land value.
The new business will be a gas and convenience store, according to the company’s website. FriendShip Food Store recently opened the Cooper Foster Park Road establishment in Amherst.
FriendShip Food Store will be the third gas station in town, but it will be the first to offer customers diesel. And since more vehicles are using diesel, it made sense to bring the company to LaGrange, Strauss said.
“This will be the first gas station for diesel in town. Before, anyone needing diesel had to drive to Wellington or Grafton,” Strauss said.
FriendShip Food Stores also offers fast food, such as pizza, fried chicken, hot dogs and bratwurst. The location in LaGrange is also designed with a yogurt bar and drive-up window.
Strauss said representatives from the company met with residents of the nearby housing development to put their minds at ease regarding privacy.
“There will be no flood lights, it will only be directional light and there will be a 3-foot mound with a 6-foot solid white plastic fence on top of the mound,” Strauss said.
Strauss said the company approached the LaGrange Planning Commission nearly three months ago with intent to buy the lot.
“I am pumped,” Strauss said. “All the businesses can prosper from this.”
Strauss said that by bringing a new company to town, new jobs will also be created and it will also affect the tax base.
“New businesses help support the tax base,” he said.
The gas tanks are set to arrive May 29. The opening of the convenience store is slated for the end of September or beginning of October.
Beck Suppliers Inc. has been in the petroleum business since 1950 and has operated FriendShip Food Stores since 1985.
