Truck driver runs through overpass, keeps driving

AMHERST — A tractor-trailer that hit an overpass in Amherst on Sunday had its roof torn off in the collision and kept driving, dragging the roof as it went, police said.

Lawrence McKay, a 58-year-old tractor-trailer driver from Michigan, was cited for not stopping after an accident and operating an unsafe vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Sunday after police found him driving a tractor-trailer with its roof ripped off.

About 8 p.m., police received multiple calls that a tractor-trailer drove into a railroad overpass on South Main Street, ripped off the roof of the truck and kept driving, according to the press release. Police stopped McKay, who was driving the tractor-trailer, more than a mile away from the wreck scene, south of the I-90 and Ohio Turnpike overpass.

According to a press release, the tractor-trailer dragged its roof for 1.5 miles, leaving ruined power lines and destroyed mailboxes in its wake.

Officers contacted Norfolk and Southern Railroad to check the overpass for damages. Police searched McKay’s vehicle, which was registered to Family Dollar Inc. and found it empty except for a few containers, according to the press release.
