Goodwill planning move to Elyria

Goodwill Industries of Lorain County is expanding.

Goodwill CEO and President Steve Greenwell said Sunday the organization plans to move some of its operations at its 13,000-square-foot location at 1600 Broadway, Lorain, to a 67,000-square-foot building at 145 Keep Court, Elyria. The move is planned for mid-August and had been discussed for a couple of years.

“People are real excited because it’s been a conversation for quite a while,” Greenwell said. “People are looking forward to a little more space.”

Goodwill has a $3.9 million annual budget, 160 full- and part-time employees, and stores in Avon, Avon Lake, Elyria, Lorain, North Ridgeville, Oberlin and Vermilion. The new building is off Beachwood Drive and Schadden Road. Greenwell said the move will give Goodwill more room for recycling, storage and warehouse operations as well as workforce development.

Workforce development includes job training for ex-convicts and welfare recipients. Greenwell said Goodwill has expanded its workforce development.

Development staff has been increased to seven workers from two in 2011. The program serves about 1,300 people annually, compared with about 800 in 2011. “At 1600 Broadway, we’re kind of limited in class space,” Greenwell said.

Greenwell said some services will continue at the 1600 Broadway site, which opened in the early 1960s. Greenwell said he’s aware that some Lorain clients lack cars, making Broadway more convenient.
