Live Stream: Superheroes to save Elyria today

ELYRIA — Comic books reign supreme today.

Grab your cape — if you have one — and head to Ely Square.

Keith’s Comics, 394 Broad St., will celebrate National Free Comic Book Day with — drum roll, please — a distribution of free comic books. The store is open 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Next, a virtual comic book event will bring residents inside the adventure. The event kicks off at 12:30 p.m. in Ely Square with the Ohio National Guard and local leaders celebrating a group of “super” kids.

Mayor Holly Brinda will issue a proclamation honoring the young heroes.

After opening ceremonies, the group of pre-selected children will visit several area businesses to take part in live-action skits, where they will team with superheroes to save the day. Each skit will last 15 to 20 minutes, starting at The Chronicle-Telegram, which will play the part of the Elyria Planet for the event.

From there, the children will head to Fifth Third Bank, Ely Square, Keith’s Comics, Lorain County Justice Center and the old Lorain County Courthouse. Ely Square will be the site of the grand finale.

The Elyria Public Library will showcase its comic book-themed bookmobile. Costumed superheroes will roam the square. Participants may receive free drawings, grab bags and prizes.

Donna’s Diner will serve super meals.
