ELYRIA — Lorain County organized labor will hold its first joint candidates’ night.
The event, sponsored by the Lorain County AFL-CIO and the Lorain County United Auto Workers CAP Council, is 6 to 8:30 p.m. April 30 at Lorain County College Spitzer Conference Center, 1005 N. Abbe Road.
Lorain County AFL-CIO President Harry Williamson said candidates’ nights are held by both the Lorain County AFL-CIO and the Lorain County UAW CAP Council, but this year, the organizations decided to co-sponsor a larger event.
“We have created such a good relationship with UAW,” he said.
Williamson said the event is not endorsed or sponsored by any political party or affiliation, so candidates will receive equal time to speak.
“As organized labor, we agree this would be a great platform to have currently-elected officials and interested candidates seeking office to have a chance to introduce themselves and give a 10- to 15-minute summary of their accomplishments and goals,” he said. “We are anticipating a great and informative evening.”
Invitations have been extended to City Council members and trustees from each city, township and village in Lorain County, Williamson said. Among those also invited are Gov. John Kasich, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald and state Sen. Gayle Manning, R-North Ridgeville.
C.H.I.P. President Tim Carrion will moderate the event, which features one question-and-answer session with state Rep. Matt Lundy, D-Elyria, and Republican Lorain County Commissioner Tom Williams. The men are campaigning for a Lorain County commissioners’ seat.
Williamson said that race is the only one that will have questions for the candidates, due to interest from the public.
“People seem to be more interested in that race,” he said.
The candidates’ night is free and open to the public. Williamson encouraged anyone seeking more information on candidates to attend.
