Farmers market moves to Broad Street

ELYRIA — The now-vacant parcel at 328 E. Broad St. will host a farmers market and art showcase.

Elyria City Hall and a Sears department store used to sit there, but the decayed building was razed a year ago after the city’s Building Department condemned it. A seeded green space was left after crews demolished the building.

“It’s big and there is parking, so a lot can happen there,” said Safety Service Director Mary Siwierka.

At least temporarily, the plan is to allow Invest Elyria to operate a farmers market at the site starting the first Saturday in June. Vendors will set up each Saturday through October.

“It’s something the community can come together on,” said Invest Elyria founder Brandon Rutherford. “There, residents can come down, meet with their neighbors and buy good, fresh local produce.”

The farmers market will replace the open-air market Main Street Elyria held yearly in Ely Square. Rutherford said he is still obtaining vendors and reaching out to local farmers.

“We are looking for local farmers who can benefit from local customers,” he said. “The bonus is we will be right next door to the Elyria Art Depot. We will have music and art.”

Antonio Barrios, president of the Lorain Arts Council, said the Elyria Art Depot will remain open all summer, but the main event of the summer will be an Elyria art picnic, which will be similar to the Lorain Art Walk.

“We want to start it as an annual event like we do in Lorain,” Barrios said. “The date is still to be determined, but we are shooting for June or July. We think it will be a great event. Since opening the Elyria Art Depot, we have met so many people who are very happy the Lorain Arts Council is in Elyria and trying to promote art downtown.”

Mayor Holly Brinda is excited about foot traffic downtown this summer.

“These two agencies can complement each other well for a unique experience for residents,” she said.
