Social media campaign promotes autism awareness


A film crew hoping to raise awareness for autism named today #BeerAutismHope Day.

The crew, Rare Brain Studios, is filming Lance’s Brewery Tour. The tour of breweries across the U.S. was organized by Vermilion resident Lance Rice, who has autism.

The social media campaign is meant to spread awareness for autism during Autism Awareness Month, said Chris Thomas, producer of Lance’s Brewery Tour and executive vice president of Rare Brain Studios.

Today, people are asked to take to Facebook, Twitter and other social media to spread Rice’s message of hope with the hashtag #BeerAutismHope. The hashtag has been used by Rare Brain Studios throughout filming.

The film featuring Rice is expected to be released this fall, he added.

Rice has an in-depth knowledge of beer history. Last April, he told The Chronicle-Telegram that he was excited to stop at some of his favorite breweries, including MillerCoors in Wisconsin.

Through the project, Rice traveled 25,000 miles, spoke at autism schools and centers for the disabled, met families with special-needs children, has given interviews to America’s largest media outlets and was named one of Cleveland Magazine’s “Most Interesting People of 2014,” according to a press release from Rare Brain Studios.

Thomas said participation in the social media campaign also helps share Lance Rice’s charity, Lance’s Room, which will provide scholarships, job training, aid and inspiration to the autism community.

Most of the proceeds from the book and film will benefit autism organizations.
