Victim of Republic train accident identified

LORAIN — A worker who died in an accident at Republic Steel on Friday has been identified as 62-year-old Frank Johnson of Brownhelm Township.

Johnson was killed late Friday morning after the train car he was riding on hit parked train cars, according to Tom McDermott, president pro tem of Local 1104 of the United Steelworkers.

Lorain County Coroner Stephen Evans said Johnson suffered multiple crush injuries to his entire body and was killed instantaneously.

According to McDermott, who said Johnson was married with a family, the crash occurred as Johnson was riding on the side of a train car being pulled by an engine to deliver scrap to the steel mill. The car Johnson was on hit a set of parked train cars, catching Johnson between the two sets of parked cars, according to McDermott.

Workers were sent home and production was stopped at the plant Friday after the crash.

An assistant area director for the Toledo office of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration said the agency has begun an investigation into the incident to determine whether any safety violations contributed to the crash and Johnson’s death.
