Six years in the making, Serena and Joseph Zinsmeister have opened The Breakwall Food and Spirits, 153 Lear Road, Avon Lake.

“I’ve been in the restaurant business my whole life — my mom has been in it, my uncle was in it. It is like a family thing, so I always wanted to do it, Serena Zinsmeister said. “We have been thinking about it and doing research for about six years — looking at different places.”

Finding the perfect location was important to the couple, who wanted to stay in Avon Lake.

“We wanted Avon Lake because he grew up here, born and raised, and our kids go to school here. So when this place became available and we thought about it, and it was the type of place we wanted. It’s nice, clean and homey,” she said.

Opened Aug. 23, customer favorites include burgers, pizza and steak. The Breakwall offers sandwiches, including a French dip, Philly steak and Valicity’s favorite (pulled pork with a fried egg). Appetizers, wings and salads round out the menu.

“Everything is homemade, our sauces — everything. Our original burger is very popular — it’s a half-pound burger. Our meat is fresh and we cut our own steaks. We even make our own pizza dough and make our own sauce.” Serena said.

Customer satisfaction is what the Zinsmeister finds most gratifying in their business.

“Seeing everyone having a good time and enjoying the food, the atmosphere — that’s rewarding. We’ve got a good crowd,” she said.

The couple has not quit their day jobs yet — she is a nurse in Westlake and Joseph works in pharmaceutical waste at Chemtron in Avon Lake. She said that they would like to open another location maybe sometime in the next 10 years.

The Breakwall Food and Spirits is open seven days a week until 1 a.m. (midnight on Sunday). It has a full liquor license and features lunch and football specials.
