Fire burns house in Grafton Township

GRAFTON TWP. — Thick plumes of gray smoke billowed from behind a tree line at state Route 303, where firefighters worked to contain a blaze called in at 1:38 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to a home at 38201 state Route 303 about a half-mile west of Chamberlain Road. Both the house and a camper were ablaze when firefighters arrived around 1:45 p.m., according to Fire Department radio transmissions.

Troopers from the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Elyria post blocked off sections of state Route 303 to traffic while firefighters fought the blaze. Firefighters from Carlisle and Eaton townships and LaGrange assisted their Grafton Township colleagues, according to an Eaton Township firefighter, who wouldn’t give his name.

Grafton Township Chief Bob Richards didn’t return calls Tuesday night.

Three people from the home were assisted with temporary housing by the American Red Cross Lorain County chapter, according to McKenzee Pratt, a Red Cross disaster specialist.

The 1,784-square foot, one-family home was built in 1978 and is owned by Donna Hawke, according to the Lorain County auditor’s website. It was sold for $168,000 in 2007, according to records.
