ELYRIA — A fire at the Elyria Foundry Co. called in about 4:15 p.m. today continued to be fought at 6:45 p.m. today.
Elyria firefighters, assisted by CarlisleTownship and Lorain firefighters, had the fire contained and were dousing hot spots at 6:45 p.m., according to Elyria Fire Chief Rich Benton. The foundry was closed for Christmas, and the cause of the fire, believed to have started on a conveyor belt, remains under investigation.
Benton said an off-duty firefighter driving by the plant at 120 Filbert Street off Gateway Boulevard spotted smoke and called the department around the time a foundry security guard called 911. The fire occurred in a rear building on the west side of the plant. The foundry has been the sight of several fires in recent years.
