ELYRIA — A line of angry customers snaked around the Revol Wireless business on West River Road as customers waited — some for days — to switch their phones over to Boost Mobile.
Holly Gunter, of Lorain, said she received a text message Monday that Revol Wireless was going out of business and that customers could switch over to Boost Mobile to receive a free phone and month of service. Gunter said the switch didn’t go over well, though.
Gunter joined a large group of people standing outside of Revol Wireless on Thursday afternoon. Most of the crowd said they had been at the store on Wednesday as well, but due to software glitches, they were forced to wait for hours.
Danielle Babbington, a spokeswoman for Sprint Corp., the company that owns Boost Mobile, said Boost Mobile did not acquire Revol Wireless and that several independently owned and operated Boost Mobile-branded stores offered free phones to former Revol customers.
She said the company is aware of the activation issues and apologized for the problems.
“We are working to solve these initial issues,” she said.
Revol will go out of business Jan. 16, according to the company website.
Gunter said she is not moving to another phone company, like Verizon Wireless or Sprint, because Boost Mobile is cheaper and doesn’t require a contract. She said she will have to pay $40 more now for her three phone lines with Boost Mobile, however.
“I got a brand new phone, and now I can’t use it,” she said.
Clifton Nichols, of Lorain, said he stood in line for two hours on Wednesday and had to return Thursday because of glitches with the system. He said he was told by the company that he would be one of the first to receive a phone, but he stood in line for another hour Thursday.
The West River Road store will be closed today, but Revol Wireless at 17472 Lorain Road will be open to assist customers, according to Babbington.
