National Guard company returns home

LORAIN -- The 94 members of the 837th Engineering Co., of the Ohio Army National Guard were saluted on their return from Afghanistan by some 800 people at a homecoming at Lorain High School today.

The Lorain-based unit removed 20 roadside bombs and covered nearly 8,100 miles in patrols while serving in Southern Afghanistan from late April to early December. None of the unit members were injured or killed.

Brigadier Gen. John Harris, commander of the Ohio Guard, said he prepares himself for the worst when soldier are deployed and thanked company Commander Capt. Chad Apple and 1st Sgt. Joseph Bernert for their leadership.

"I hope I can convey to you the significance of these two young men not only taking your loved ones into harm's way, but bringing every single one of them home intact," Harris said to applause.
