Man found dead after apartment fire identified

ELYRIA — Elyria police and the Lorain County coroner’s office have identified the man who was found dead after a house fire on Monday evening as Franklin Cory, 62, of Elyria.

Cory’s body was found after a fire broke out in his second-floor unit of a quadplex on 341 East River St. about 11 p.m. Monday.

Police ruled Cory’s death suspicious and Lorain County Coroner Stephen Evans completed an autopsy to determine Cory’s cause of death Wednesday.

However, Evans and police are not releasing the autopsy’s results until police can investigate further, according to Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino.

Costantino said that Cory lived in the apartment for three years. According to neighbors, the 62-year-old was a quiet man who kept to himself and could often be seen walking his dog around the neighborhood.

However neighbors said that the quadplex in which Cory lived is a loud building and the site of a lot of late night activity.

Cory himself had a short criminal history in Grafton, where he was charged with breaking and entering, possessing criminal tools, criminal trespassing and theft for an incident on July 29, 2009.
