LORAIN — The driver killed in an apparent freak accident at Mercy Regional Medical Center around 9:10 a.m. today has been identified.
Steven DeSantis, 47, of Chardon, was crushed to death, according to a preliminary finding from Dr. Stephen Evans, Lorain County coroner. Evans said an industrial-sized trash bin fell on DeSantis’ back.
DeSantis, a driver for Monteville-based Cotterman and Sons, was hauling roofing debris from a project at the hospital, according to police Detective Buddy Sivert. Sivert said DeSantis had been to the hospital before.
Sivert said there were no witnesses or surveillance video, but preliminary findings indicate DeSantis went under the bin which was partially on DeSantis’ truck. DeSantis was removing pallets which were blocking him from placing the bin fully on the truck.
Sivert said it appears the bin wasn’t properly secured and fell.
“It looks like it was just a tragic accident,” Sivert said.
