Lt. Streator named Avon Lake assistant police chief

AVON LAKE — City Police Lt. Duane Streator is now interim assistant police chief for that community.

City Council Monday night unanimously approved the appointment after creating the new position, designed to allow Streator to work closely with Police Chief Dave Owad, who is retiring in January.

Effective today, Streator will be paid $88,601.91 and will be eligible for overtime compensation and benefits.

Streator was certified by the Civil Service Commission and is expected to be hired as chief once Owad’s retirement is official.

Councilman Dan Bucci said a similar interim position was created for the Avon Lake Fire Department and the position worked well.

“This would be an interim position in which the new chief could work closely with the chief and basically learn the ropes before he takes that position,” he said.

Other action:

* City Council elected its officers for 2014.

Council President Martin O’Donnell retains his post by unaminous vote. Councilman Larry Meiners was elected president pro tempore.

O’Donnell has served on council for eight years and has been a member of the economic development, environmental, finance, safety and sewer committees.

Meiners has been on council since 2004, serving as chairman of the finance committee and as a member of the human resources, public service and sewer committees.

* Council approved the purchase of a 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe and two 2014 Ford Utility Interceptors for the Police Department.

The vehicles would be purchased through the Cooperative Purchasing Program of the State of Ohio – the Tahoe from Byers Chevrolet in Columbus at a cost of $26,416 and the Interceptors for $54,560 from Statewide Ford of Van Wert.

The Police Department vehicles are needed for the “health, safety and welfare of the residents of Avon Lake,” the legislation read.
