Intruding deer causes damage inside Avon Lake residence

AVON LAKE — William McCleave was watching television when he heard what sounded like a car crashing through his house. But McCleave didn’t expect what he came face-to-face with in his sunroom that night.

At 8:30 p.m. Nov. 6, McCleave called police after finding a large buck in the room. The deer had broken through a glass window but was unable to escape from the same window.

McCleave said it was lucky that he was home alone, but he decided it would be smart to let the Avon Lake police handle the problem.

“I decided it wasn’t a good idea to go face-to-face with a deer with a lot of antlers,” he said.

The deer was eventually coaxed out, but not before leaving behind a trail of blood and considerable damage inside the Westwind Drive condo.

Avon Lake police Sgt. Vincent Molnar said the deer tore off an antler before running out of the window.

Luckily, McCleave said, his insurance is covering the cost of most of the damage.

“This is the first real problem I’ve had with deer, but the deer are all over the place,” he said.
