Mayor Jim Smith’s biggest mistake
Smith said his biggest screw-up in office was applying for a bond for the post office approximately eight years ago. He believed that the post office was not-for-profit — a mistake that he said he is still paying for to the tune of an extra $15,000 per year.
“We had to pay more on the interest payment than I anticipated, and I’m usually pretty thorough,” he said. “I should have known ... I think about that every time I drive by the post office.”
Mayor Smith’s funniest recollection
In 1998, Smith said a resident called him to complain about a deer-crossing sign that had been placed in front of her home on Schwartz Road. Smith, who laughed when recounting the call, said the woman asked him to relocate the sign.
“She said, ‘Get that away from my yard,’ and she said, ‘I don’t want the deer crossing in front of my yard,’ and that’s a true story,” he said.
