ELYRIA – City leaf collections will begin Monday and run through Saturday, Dec. 7.

Eight crews will cover the city during that time and will concentrate first on areas with more mature trees. Collection will generally follow sanitation routes, but the schedule will be greatly influenced by the weather.

Residents should rake leaves to the curb in piles or rows as close as possible to the street, but not in the street. Brush, twigs or other material should not be mixed with leaves as those items will clog the vacuum equipment and slow the collection process.

After Dec. 7, only leaves bagged in brown paper composting bags will be collected. Leaves in clear or garbage bags will not be collected at all during the collection cycle.

Residents should also remember the following safety tips including not letting children play in leaf piles or near the street/curb, parking vehicles near or on leaf piles and placing prohibiting material in leaf piles.

Residents who do not want to wait for the city to collect leaves may bag them and dispose of them at the city’s compost facility located at 45 Chestnut St. Residents must show proof of residency. The hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
