Teens part of burglary group charged in recent break in

ELYRIA – Two teenagers who were found trying to break into a house on Thursday are connected to a group which has been committing burglaries around the area recently, according to police.

A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old were charged with attempted burglary near the intersection of West River Road and West Bridge Street around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

The pair was seen by a neighbor trying to break into a home on the 100 block of Water Street around noon. The neighbor told police that she heard a crash coming from a house near her on Water Street, and the two teenagers were seen by the neighbor walking from the area minutes later, heading towards West Bridge Street, according to Elyria Police Capt. Chris Costantino.

After a short search for the boys, police found them on West River Road North and took them into custody.

Both boys have been charged for burglaries before in Elyria. Though they aren’t in a gang, the teens are part of a larger group in Elyria whose members have been committing burglaries around the town in the past few months according to Costantino.

“I don’t know why they’re doing it,” Costantino said. “They just don’t care.”
